Slovenia Trip

June 2007

Another country established from the Balkan war. It lies at the heart of Europe where the Alps and Mediterranean meet. It is a small strikingly picturesque country halfway between Vienna and Venice. It recently was accepted into the European Union and uses the Euro for currency. The symbol of Slovenia is the heart…as in Slovenia. Decorated heart cookies are sold all over. Fresh fish is great, as is their cream cake.

LAKE BLED
Beautiful resort in Slovenia with hot springs thought to have healing powers...a popular fresh air retreat. Great for walking, bike riding, hiking. visit Bled Castle in a fairy-tale setting, perched on a high mountain overlooking lake bled, standing watch over town. The castle now houses a restaurant and a museum. Tito's former residence is along the lake. Take a boat to the 17th century church on an island in the lake. Have a fresh trout dinner grilled on wood embers at the Union Restaurant...within walking distance of the lake.

POSTOJNA CAVES
Admire the size and splendor of the underground world formed by millions of years of water activity. The caves will dazzle you with their calcite formations, stalactites and stalagmites in a variety of shapes, colours, sizes and age. See a network of miles of passages, galleries and chambers. Begin the visit in a cave train. It's 46 degrees, so dress warm. Guided tours take 1½ hour.

LJUBLJANA
City of 300,000 and capital of Slovenia. A very pleasant city to stroll. Buildings have a unique architectural style with some modern design. The earthquake in 1895 did much damage, but structures have been restored. The river runs through the city, and there are dozens of shops with home-made crafts, cafes, and restaurants along the promenade embankments. Not far from the river is a wonderful fresh fruit market with berries home-grown in the fertile soil of Slovenia. The narrow streets are filled with shops and cafes. City is home to Ljubljana University.

SKOFJA LOKA
A lovely 8th century well-preserved town located at the confluence of two rivers. An imposing castle overlooks the settlement. Also see other beautifully restored 15th century structures and gothic church... walk the narrow streets. An enjoyable place to visit.

NACE'S HOUSE
A museum and monument of Slovene cultural legacy...belongs to the Polenec family in Skofja Loka, Slovenia. Has a 1755 baroque appearance, but cellar vaults indicate 15/16th century. Black kitchen is heart of house...preserved in its original state.

KROPA
Another medieval village...an iron-working community. Check out the museum and stroll around for a walk back in time.
