Romania Trip

May 2014

This Eastern European cruise was very educational for we learned about former communist countries/people, their endurance and journey into the world of today. We also witnessed the results of the 1991-95 Croat-Serb War and the devastation/ruins that remain.

The former Yugoslavia no longer exists, and its breakup caused changes and upheavals for many residents. The countries we visited are Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia, and Hungary. We sailed thru the 40-mile Danube River to the Black Sea canal and passed thru the Iron Gates where the Danube narrows and flows between the gorges.

Romania’s capitol is Bucharest Our trip began in Bucharest, Romania, then continued on to Constanta, Romania… a port on the Danube River.

The Romanian people suffered under Nicolae Ceaucescu (1965-1995), a communist regime. He became head of the Romanian communist party in 1965, and his draconian rule of The 1980s was ended by the Romanian revolution of 1989. Romania joined NATO in 2004 and the European Union in 2007.

Bucharest: is the capital municipality, cultural, industrial, and financial center of Romania. It is the largest city in Romania, located in the southeast of the country. Although buildings and districts in the historic city center were heavily damaged or destroyed by war, earthquakes, and above all Nicolae Ceaucescu, many survived. In recent years, the city has been experiencing an economic/cultural boom.

Economically, Bucharest is the most prosperous city in Romania and is one of the main industrial centers and transportation hubs of Eastern Europe. The city has convention facilities, educational institutes, cultural venues, traditional "shopping arcades" and recreational areas.

After time in Bucharest, we head to Constanta, Romania where the boat is docked to begin our 13 day boat cruise.

Constanta (historically known as Tomis) is the oldest populated city in Romania. It was founded around 600 BC. The city is located in the Dobruja region of Romania, on the Black Sea coast. It is the fifth most populous city in Romania.. It is the largest port on the Black Sea and one of the largest ports in Europe.
