Atlantic City

Atlantic City has always been a resort town. Its location in South Jersey, along the Atlantic Ocean, became prime real estate for developers. The city was incorporated in 1854 and train service began, linking this land with Philadelphia; consequently, it became a popular beach destination because of this proximity. The first boardwalk was built in 1870 along the beach. The boardwalk was later expanded and modified. Before the 1944 hurricane the length of the boardwalk was about 7 miles.

The world's first oceanside amusement pier was built in Atlantic City in 1882. The Steel Pier opened in 1898, and billed itself as "The Showplace of the Nation." Today it is opposite Trump Taj Mahal and is used as an amusement pier. The Million Dollar Pier opened in 1906 and is now opposite Caesar's Casino. The Garden Pier once housed a movie theater, and is now home to the Atlantic City Historical Society and an Arts Center. Steeplechase Pier, an amusement pier, once existed just west of Steel Pier.

By the late 1960s, the typical Atlantic City tourist was invariably poor, elderly, or both. Many of the resort's great hotels were closed due to vacancy rates, or they were converted to cheap apartments or nursing home facilities. In an effort to revitalize the city, New Jersey voters in 1976 approved casino gambling for Atlantic City.

Today Atlantic City is famous for its boardwalk, casino gambling, sandy beaches, shopping centers, the game of Monopoly, and a spectacular view of the Atlantic Ocean. The city (in 2008) had a population of 35,770.

Cape May

Cape May began hosting vacationers from Philadelphia in the mid 1700s and is recognized by the United States government as the country's oldest seaside resort. Cape May draws visitors from all over the world. It was ranked the fifth best beach in New Jersey in the 2008 Top 10 Beaches Contest sponsored by the New Jersey Marine Sciences Consortium. It has been recognized as one of America's top 10 beaches by the Travel Channel. And, it is known as the top birding location on the East Coast.

Becoming increasingly popular in the 18th century, it was considered one of the finest resorts in America by the 19th century. It is noted for its large number of well-maintained Victorian gingerbread houses — the second largest collection of Victorian-era homes in the nation after San Francisco. In 1976, the entire city of Cape May was designated a National Historic Landmark. As of the 2000 census, there was a population of 4,034 year-round residents. Cape May is the southernmost point in New Jersey.

Wildwood

Wildwood is a resort city in Cape May County that is very popular with vacationers and tourists from NJ, NY, DE, PA et al. Its most notable features are its beach and 1.8-mile boardwalk, home to the Morey’s Pier amusement complex and Raging Waters and Ocean Oasis water parks. The boardwalk features the Tramcar, a trolley running from end to end. It is also home to Splash Zone Water Park. Built in 1999, Splash Zone features the world's highest dumping bucket and the biggest family raft ride on the east coast. It was ranked the best beach in New Jersey in the 2008 Top 10 Beaches Contest.

Wildwood houses over 200 motels, built during the Doo-Wop era of the 1950s and 1960s, in an area recognized by the State of New Jersey as the Wildwoods Shore Resort Historic District. The term Doo-Wop was coined by Cape May’s Mid-Atlantic Center For The Arts in the early 1990s to describe the unique, space-age architectural style. The motels are unique in appearance with Vegas-like neon signs.

Morristown

Morristown is the county seat of Morris County, NJ and is approximately 30 miles northwest of New York City. It’s rich in history and played a strategic position in the Revolutionary War. It is home to many large corporations on Madison Avenue and hundreds of businesses…both large and small.

George Washington first came to Morristown in May of 1773, two years before the Revolutionary War. In 1777, General George Washington and the Continental Army marched from the victories at Trenton and Princeton to encamp near Morristown from January to May. From December 1779 to June 1780 the Continental Army's second encampment at Morristown was at Jockey Hollow. Morristown became characterized as the military capital of the American Revolution because of its strategic role in the war for independence from Great Britain. The Morristown Green has a statue commemorating the meeting of George Washington, the young Marquis de LaFayette, and young Alexander Hamilton. Morristown’s estimated population in 2004 was 18,842.
