FIJI TRIP

Shangri-La Resort

MARCH 2011

Fiji is an independent island in the South Pacific Ocean (1300 miles North of NZ), formed through volcanic activity. It was a British colony for nearly a century and gained independence in 1970. Today it has a Democratic government. Its past history is rather violent. Intertribal wars forced the people into fortified villages, and cannibalism became so common that Fiji became infamous as the Cannibal Isles. When it was annexed by the British, this system was abolished. Today the culture is a rich mosaic of indigenous, Indian, Chinese and European traditions.

The main island is known as Viti Levu. The climate in Fiji is tropical and warm most of the year round with minimal extremes. It is famous for its pristine beaches and blue waters. This was a great place to relax at the end of a one month trip to Australia, New Zealand and Fiji.

The Shangri-La Resort is on its own private island South of the city of Nadi. The beaches are great and there are two swimming pools with one being an "adults only" pool. The restaurants serve good food, and the bar is lively with entertainment some nights. The main attraction remains the beauty of the tropical environment and the blue-green ocean.
